Symposium:

The professional training symposium "Developing civic activism through creative education" is intended for youth workers, teachers, and primarily civic education teachers and drama pedagogues. We believe that those attending the symposium will be, like us, interested in working with young people to improve their critical thinking skills which would result in their active engagement in the field of various civic practices in the three specific domains identified as priorities in the current historical context and part of the eleven objectives for the European Youth Strategy 2019-2027:

-građanska svest o ekologiji (očuvanje ekološkog integriteta i pravo na postojanje u zdravoj životnoj sredini)

- civic awareness of democracy at the EU level (active participation in the EU system of rights and responsibilities);

– civic awareness of social issues (behavior and behavior of individuals in society).

ABOUT THE PROJECT ITSELF:

BEAC: PROGRAMS FOR DEVELOPING THE PRACTICE OF ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP

The BEAC project aims to develop training resources to help young people, aged 15 to 24, acquire and put into practice critical thinking skills.

The methodology on which the training resources will be based are two innovative pedagogical approaches:

The first is Philosophy for Community (P4C). This practice is based on Matthew Lipman's Philosophy for Children adapted for use with adolescents and young adults. The method is based on the use of videos, pictures or stories as a stimulus for conversation. After that, the participants begin to inquire and with the support of a trained facilitator begin to discuss the topics arising from the stimulus, actively participating in the process of construction and deconstruction of knowledge.

The P4C methodology is basically intended for extracurricular, formal and informal contexts. As suggested by Matthew Lippman, it is always necessary to start with prompts, in order to identify a discussion plan that, with the help of empathic listening, promotes critical, creative and values-based thinking. With this approach, the role of the facilitator seems to be crucial. Far from being a transmitter of predetermined truths, he/she limits himself to holding the thread of reasoning, looking for examples and asking follow-up questions, leaving the stage to the community.

In this process, each person brings their world into play and discovers the value of presence, and different points of view are not stifled, but are imagined as a moment of productive confrontation in order to arrive at a conclusion that is subject to change. Many of the principles of P4C can be applied to all ages and in most subject areas using some simple practices: inquiry, concept development, dialogue, argument and argumentation work.

The second is Artful Thinking (AT). AT is an educational methodology originally developed by Harvard Project Zero. The purpose of the Artful Thinking Program is to use the visual arts to develop thinking dispositions that support thoughtful learning. While AT was originally developed to be used in a formal educational context, within the project it will be adapted for use in a non-formal education environment.
